Hope you all had a great Martin Luther King Day!
He had a dream and now we are leaving this dream. The most important thing to remember is where we come from, where we are now and where we are aiming to get.
Time was hard for our ancestors who fought for us, to have such a freedom today. Unfortunately most of us take this freedom for granted. As if, we black people had it before. Our freedom should not be taken for granted. We have a lot to learn. And it hurts me even more when I hear us calling each other 'nigga' in our own community! and yet, we are surprised when another race call us so.
2 examples here:
This of Rihanna.
Man Down song quoted lyrics
"end a nigga, end a nigga life so soon?"
Hard song quoted lyrics
"But the hottest bitch in heels right here"
Do ya thing quoted lyrics
"Make a nigga scream and shout, shout"
And now a german magazine calling her "Nigga Bitch" and she gets mad?
Sometimes is it not our own selves to blame? if we made it clear from the beginning "Nigga" was a bad word then, in my opinion we would have had the right to complain. But we make it sound so cool therefore, we should be responsible for our own acts.
The second example is that of the "Slave Earing" by Vogue Italia.
This was innaceptable since we all know SLAVE is offencive. And I believe by the same way we feel offended by SLAVE we should feel for the "N" word. Because as I record, no black people will tolerate being called a slave by another black person, yet why do we accept and the "N" word? o_O
Why would we allow our rappers pronounce this word in rap songs and sing along with them or respond when our fellows call us so. "Nigga" is such a disgrace word for our entire generation. Our ancestors stood up for many years and even got killed fighting against the use of this adjective for decades. And as a thank you note for the little freedom we got these days we find it fun to use it. It's hurtful.
I hope this year's Martin Luther King Jr day made you reflect on so many thing. We have a long way to go. We are not there yet!
xoxo_
